American Legion Youth Baseball

PLAYER EVALUATIONS

Purpose

American Legion Youth Baseball utilizes player evaluations to create balanced teams within each age division. Head coaches are asked to provide player evaluations for their team roster at the end of each summer and fall league. Any 8U-12U player that did not play at the American Legion during the most recent Summer or Fall League is required to attend a Player Evaluation Day as scheduled by the League. In the event that a player’s most recent coach did not submit the mandatory end-of-season coach evaluations, a returning 8U-12U player may still be required to attend the current season’s player evaluations.

NOTE: All 6U Division players moving up to the 8U Division for the first time must attend a player evaluation.

Process

Player Evaluations provide the opportunity for players to demonstrate the basic skills of baseball (i.e., fielding fly and ground balls, throwing and pitching) in the presence of other players in the same age group/division in which he/she will most likely play. The Player Evaluations shall be conducted in the presence of at least one ALYB Board Member. The information gathered from the preseason player evaluations are utilized in conjunction with those player evaluations on file to create balanced team rosters within each age division.

Once a player has registered and the player registration period has ended the player will be notified via email if they are required to attend Player Evaluations. A player will not be assigned to a team roster without a recent/current evaluation on file.

Evaluation Day

A player need only attend one of any scheduled player evaluation days. Players should bring a glove along with a legal bat and helmet if they have them. The itinerary for player evaluations is as follows:

  • Player Check-In/Warm-Up
  • Introduction/Expectations
  • Infield Evaluation
  • Hitting Evaluation
  • Pitching Evaluation (10U and 12U only)
